FAQ
Compostable tableware, answered.
Everything people ask about Tilipan's compostable disposable plates, bowls, trays and cutlery — made from fallen areca palm leaves and sugarcane bagasse. Can't find it? Ask us.
- What is Tilipan tableware made from?
- Tilipan makes 100% compostable disposable tableware from two natural plant materials. Areca (betel) palm leaf sheaths that fall on their own are washed and heat-pressed into rigid, wood-grained plates, bowls and trays; sugarcane bagasse — the fibre left after pressing sugarcane for juice — is moulded into smooth, porcelain-white plates, bowls and compartment trays. No tree is cut, and nothing is added: no plastic, wax, PFAS or chemical coating.
- Are palm leaf and bagasse plates compostable or biodegradable?
- They are compostable, which is a stricter and regulated promise than 'biodegradable'. Because Tilipan tableware is pure plant fibre with no synthetic liner, it breaks down in a home compost in roughly 60–90 days — faster in a commercial facility — into non-toxic soil, leaving no microplastics behind.
- What is the difference between compostable and biodegradable?
- 'Biodegradable' only means an item will eventually break down, with no guaranteed timeframe — and some biodegradable plastics leave microplastics behind. 'Compostable' is the stricter, regulated standard: the item breaks down into non-toxic soil within a defined period under composting conditions. All Tilipan tableware is compostable, not merely biodegradable.
- Are Tilipan plates microwave, oven and freezer safe?
- Yes. Both areca palm leaf and bagasse tableware are microwave-safe for short reheating, freezer-safe for chilling and storage, and hold up to hot-serving temperatures (bagasse to around 95°C / 200°F). You can reheat or chill food straight in the ware without transferring it to another dish.
- Are they leak-proof and good for hot, oily or saucy food?
- Yes. The fibre is naturally dense and water- and oil-resistant, so curries, dressings, juices and hot food stay put with no synthetic liner. Areca palm leaf is especially rigid for heavy, fully loaded plates, while bagasse holds liquids and oily food cleanly.
- Are palm leaf and bagasse plates safe and non-toxic?
- Yes. Tilipan tableware is 100% natural plant fibre with no plastic, wax, PFAS ('forever chemicals') or chemical coating, and nothing is bleached or dyed. It is food-safe, and food-contact and compostability documentation is available on request.
- Areca palm leaf vs bagasse — which should I choose?
- Choose areca palm leaf for a premium, natural look — each piece is rigid, wood-grained and unique, ideal for weddings, grazing tables and upscale events. Choose bagasse for a clean, uniform porcelain-white look at a lower price point, ideal for high-volume catering, canteens and takeaway. Both are 100% compostable and perform the same on heat, oil and leaks.
- How long do Tilipan plates take to compost?
- About 60–90 days in a home compost bin or pile, and faster in a commercial or industrial composting facility. Simply scrape and rinse off any food, then add the ware to home compost or a municipal organics bin — no special facility is required.
